Sometimes the best weekends are a mix of things you planned and things you just happened to stumble across. You might head out for a vintage market and end up staying for live music, or grab dinner and discover a new favorite spot.

This week has plenty of those possibilities. There is a rebranded collectibles shop to check out, free music around town, and a chance for kids to run the bases after Sunday's Angels game. Pick a few and see where the weekend takes you.

Main Street gets a star-studded parade!

The Gist: Disneyland is hosting a Disney Legends Cavalcade on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 1:30 p.m. to kick off the big D23 fan convention in Anaheim. The parade along Main Street, U.S.A. features the Disneyland Band, 23 Disney and Pixar characters, and Disney Legends riding aboard double-decker buses. Big names expected around the convention week include Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Robin Roberts, and the Jonas Brothers.

Why It Matters: Events like this bring extra excitement to our backyard, turning a regular afternoon in Anaheim into a star-studded celebration.

🏫 The neighborhood-hub school model gets a boost

The Gist: A new $35.5 million investment in the state budget will expand community schools across Orange County. District leaders, trustees and students gathered August 4 in Anaheim High School's Cook Auditorium to mark it. Roughly $215 million has already gone to 147 schools across 14 county districts and OCDE alternative education programs, reaching an estimated 85,000 students.

Why It Matters: Anaheim Union's campuses are the working model here. Community schools link families to mental health services, resource centers, tutoring and after-school support in their own neighborhood, which Superintendent Jaron Fried described as keeping schools "vibrant hubs within our community."

🌮 Classic Mexican plates built for big appetites

531 W Chapman Ave, Anaheim

For over five decades, La Casa Garcia has been the ultimate anchor for celebratory table-gatherings, post-meeting debriefs, and spontaneous weeknight feasts. The aroma of daily-simmered menudo and house-made salsa sets the stage for sizzling fajitas, comforting chili rellenos, and generous shredded beef enchiladas.

Whether you are splitting a legendary ten-pound burrito with your crew or unwinding over strawberry margaritas, Frank Garcia’s dining room delivers genuine warmth and unbeatable taste.

🎒 Capsules, collectibles, and a fresh look

5655 E La Palma Ave Ste 115, Anaheim

The spot on La Palma formerly known as The ArToy is kicking off the school year with a new name on the sign: MINTOX LAB. Owner John keeps the shelves stocked with rows of gachapon machines, blind boxes, and Pokémon restocks, plus a duplicate trade section and practice claw machine.

To mark the rebrand, a soft opening party on Saturday, August 15th at 11am features welcome gifts, face painting, and blind box raffles.
